I just came across this website:

http://subyo.com/

and my first thought is that if any hearing friends send me a youtube video to watch, I can ask them if they'd take the time to subtitle it for me.

I doubt they will go to the trouble, we all have lives to live, and much of government exists to make our lives easier, thus I agree with Joe's persistent coverage of the government regulation of internet subtitle, but it is in no way related to how much we should devote time to the subject. Why don't you learn sign language MM?

Sigh, as I said:

I only ever have demand that where *companies and/or governments/councils etc* provide a internet video - for example BBC, CNN, British Government whenever they do a video, The Family Guy if they go online etc etc - they subtitle the videos, they have the time and money and resources to do so. They don't really have any excuses.

I have never demanded that anyone who in their own personal time make a vlog and subtitle it. Joe Bloggs of next door make a video of him talking away about last night's Eastenders show and post it on his blog or YouTube. I do not demand that he subtitle it and never have done so.

People want me to subtitle my videos, I can only say sorry, no can do. In fact you, MM, is the only person to go on about it. Everyone else accept it. I just provide a transcript and leave it at that. Making a video and posting it and providing transcript = 1 hour. Subtitling it = 2 hours (to get all timing etc correct). I have let's say 3 hours of "computer time". I'll use the other 2 hours for accessing emails, feeds etc, perhaps make a video call to friends etc. No time for subtitles.

What you are demanding is that I take *another* 2 hours away from my family, and spend it on subtitling a video for just YOU. Guess what? Piss off, you're not that important. My family is. You have the transcript, that's enough.

Companies that plan to broadcast online and make money out of it. = they must subtitle, I demand it.
Home users doing videos for themselves and friends and make no money out of it, but is done for fun = I do not demand they subtitle it. It's their choice if they want to subtitle it or not. Ben Fletcher have just done this by choice, so go there and be happy that he've spend the time to provide subtitles. Ben wouldn't demand I do subtitles either. I can't follow ASL myself but I've never demanded he does subtitles or provide transcript. I can ask, but I do not expect him to say yes. In fact I would say that Ben would agree with me here.

Simple enough for you? Nothing contradictory about it.

If you REALLY want something contradictory then look at yourself. If someone ask you to provide a BSL translation of every one of your blog posts, you will not do this. But you will demand that they subtitle their videos. That's contradictory. For the record I've never demanded that you provide a BSL translation of every one of your posts, and when you do make a video, I've never demended that you provide a subtitle to go with it. That's up to you. Not me.

The legalisation in USA is saying the same thing. Even they get it.

You are contradictory, in that you go on about tilting/captioning elsewhere but will refuse to provide it yourself and offer ridicule to those who asked for it to you. It's that duplicity people will get annoyed about. Lead by example. Your idea about access changes with the wind... Access to your vblogs is nothing to do with money,it is about you showing consistency in providing access for peers and what you demand of others. If that is being 'thick' so be it. Perhaps we need more thick people.

MM - Difference 2: That subtitling is for a language difference. An interested party can learn sign. A deaf/hh person cannot learn to hear. CC in Spanish is handy for a Spanish speaking person, but also should not be required (in the US. In Mexico, yes it should be).

You STILL haven't gotten it have you?

You're right in that I didn't bother to subtitle my own videos - as I've said, I do not have the time to do so. However I provided transcripts so your point is...?

I'm just a person at home, doing this in my own spare time for fun, and this site is just for anyone that fancy a look - mostly family and friends. Anyone else welcome by choice.

If I was to do subtitles, it would take up a huge amount of my time - which I would rather spend with my family. I do this site in my free time - ie after work, before bed, and time is precious.

I've always said that for personal videos etc - I've never demanded anyone do subtitles - just that it's their choice. Likewise with hearing people that make a waffling video in their own personal time - I don't demand they subtitle it either. It's their own choice if they do that.

The difference with The Family Guy in case you still haven't got it, people are *paid* to work on it. People work for a living on it, making videos, managing the website for when they go online etc etc, it's all a job for them. They've got the money for it. They can afford to pay for someone to do subtitles. If you actually bothered to read the article I linked to where it talks about The Family Guy etc - you'll see that it talk about a lot of money, serious advertisiting money etc. They all aim to make money out of it, make a profit.

Your demands on me is for me, a person at home, doing it in spare time to spend an extra 2 hours on each video to subtitle it. 2 hours which I do not have, because guess what? I like to spend with with my children and my wife. I even like to watch the TV and relax.

My demand is to for anyone making serious money out of their internet videos - making a nice profit etc or with millions of dollars/pounds/euros of funding behind it etc (example - BBC) - subtitle their videos, they can pay for someone to do it.

IF I made loads of money out of my site along with videos then yes I agree, I should subtitle my videos. But take a look at this site - I have no adverts. Nor do I plan to have them. I pay for my own site etc out of my own pocket and I make nothing out of it. It's done in personal time.

That's what I've always argued about in the past and continue to do so. Are you managing to understand that or continue to be thick just for the sake of trolling?

So, sized display, PowerDVD 7 takes advantage of the black spaces on the top and bottom of your video by moving the subtitles to these areas.

This is definitely an interesting piece of legislation. I look forward to seeing the technological impacts that this will have on online video broadcasting.
